History of the Civil Appellate High Court

Strengthening the efficiency of the civil justice system in Sri Lanka.

Establishment of the Court

The Civil Appellate High Court of Jaffna commenced its historical appellate sittings in 2007 following the implementation of the High Court of the Provinces (Special Provisions) (Amendment) Act No. 54 of 2006, decentralizing appellate review to the Northern Province[cite: 7].

Exercising both appellate and revisionary jurisdiction, the Court was created to relieve litigants in the Northern Province from the logistical and financial strain of pursuing civil appeals at the Court of Appeal in Colombo[cite: 7].

Commitment to Judicial Efficiency

To accommodate modern administrative, record room, and judicial requirements, a new court building complex was constructed in 2017[cite: 7]. Today, the Court functions seamlessly with Court Room No. 01, modern chambers, and a registry dedicated to the fair and efficient disposal of appeals[cite: 7].
